Do you want to write a book? Writing a book is the grand goal of many aspiring writers. However, there are a few things that you need to consider before you can write books for a living. It would be smart to gain experience by doing other forms of writing such as articles and short stories before you take on a grand and time-consuming project.

Submitting your work to a few print publications to see if you can actually sell your writing is one way of gaining experience. You have to get used to the process of querying and submitting shorter works to editors if you want to write books. This will help you gain experience with the whole process of publishing your written work.

It will also help you find out how to deal with rejection. If you have talent, then you will probably have some victories along the way. However, writers usually experience much more rejection than acceptance for their work.

Successful authors say that perseverance is equally as important as talent when it comes to writing. You should develop a thick skin so that you can deal with the fact that not everyone will like your style of writing or be interested in the topics you choose to write about. You have to recognize this before you start to write books.

You may have to consider a different career if you fall apart the first time you receive a rejection letter for a short article. Remember that you will feel a lot worse when you are rejected by publishers after you spend even more of your time to write books. You have to be tough enough to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again. There is a good chance that you will have to try over and over again, until you finally get an approval.

You also have to become comfortable working with an editor who can get your story or ideas into a format that will sell if you want to write books for a living. The editor knows more about the audience and can help you shape your work to reach your audience successfully. Of course, you are the author and the ideas for the book may be yours. The idea of others having input into your work can also bother you. It would be a wise idea to write books that you can publish yourself if you feel this way.

There are now many more markets such as self-publishing and e-books that are available to writers through the Internet. Writing books for digital distribution may not give you a lot of income but it will allow you creative freedom while giving you the chance to hone your skills.
